Avon Woods Now Part of Tillman Precinct

On July 1, 2025, the Memphis Police Department updated the boundaries for four station areas: Airways, Appling Farms, Mt. Moriah, and Tillman. Avon Woods, once part of the Appling Farms precinct is now within the Tillman Station precinct — a positive change for our neighborhood.

According to the Memphis Police Department website, “These changes are designed to balance workloads, to spend more time building relationships in the communities we serve, and to allow officers to respond more quickly when you need us. This effort is part of our continued commitment to building a stronger, safer Memphis for everyone.”

While we were well served by the Appling Farms station, Avon Woods was located in what was then the largest precinct coverage area in the city. Now, not only is Avon Woods located within the boundaries of a smaller precinct, we are also physically closer to Tillman (approx. 4 miles) versus Appling Farms (approx. 5.5 miles).

The Avon Woods Neighborhood Association steering committee and Neighborhood Watch see this as potential for an even closer working relationship with the Memphis Police Department and Tillman Station’s Neighborhood Watch Coordinator. An early sign of this was the large attendance by Tillman Station officers, including Colonel Willie Mathena, at the Annual Avon Woods Fourth of July Parade & Picnic.
