About Neighborhood Watch

A 50+ year old program, led locally by MPD and proven a successful crime deterrent

The Neighborhood Watch program is made up of citizens who take the initiative to help prevent crime in their neighborhoods. Participants keep an eye out for their neighbors and their homes by taking note of unusual activity and reporting the proper information to the authorities in the event of a crime. Locally, the Neighborhood Watch program is led by the Crime Prevention Unit of the Memphis Police Department, taking a proactive approach to citizen interaction with a wide range of activities. A highly successful effort and proven deterrent to crime, Neighborhood Watch has been in existence for more than 50 years in cities and counties across America — and several neighborhoods throughout Memphis.

What We Do

An organized effort by Avon Woods volunteers in partnership with MPD

Partnering closely with the Memphis Police Department, our active Neighborhood Watch group helps keep Avon Woods safe through a system of Block Captains, quarterly meetings and constant contact with MPD. As part of the broader Avon Woods Neighborhood Association, we believe getting to know our neighbors through various social and service activities helps build connections and awareness as an important first step in neighborhood safety.

Block Captains

A network of dedicated neighbors watching out for those nearest to them

Working with the Avon Woods Neighborhood Watch lead, Block Captains volunteer to be a point person for the neighbors nearest them, typically one section of the street where they live. The only commitment of the Block Captain is to acquire contact information from nearby neighbors and creating a group text in order to advise each other of suspicious activities, criminal incidents or BOLO (be on the lookout) as needed. When a situation warrants, the Block Captain passes along critical information to the other Avon Woods Block Captains as part of another group text. If the situation warrants police notification, NEIGHBORS SHOULD ALWAYS CONTACT POLICE FIRST before contacting their Block Captain. Emergencies requiring immediate police and/or medical response should be reported to 911. Non-emergencies should be reported to MPD at 901-545-COPS (2677).

To view our Block Captains coverage, visit the Avon Woods Neighborhood Watch Google map, which shows the areas that are covered by Block Captains, as well as the gaps where additional Block Captains are needed. (Note this map is accessible only to those with the direct link and not viewable by the general public.) If you would like to be connected to your local Block Captain or volunteer as a Block Captain if there isn’t one in your immediate area, please contact Avon Woods Neighborhood Watch lead Mary K. Allen.

What You Can Do

Some basic safety tips and ways to get involved

The basis of a strong Neighborhood Watch and a safer neighborhood is knowing your neighbors, staying in communication and reporting crime. Connecting with or becoming a Block Captain is one way you can do that. A few safety basics worth remembering are: Keep your house well lit at light, report streetlight outages, be aware of your surroundings at all times, and install a doorbell camera or other security system.

To assist MPD, register your doorbell camera at Connect2Memphis.org, a safety program that makes it easier for police to track down video evidence after a crime occurs. Registering your camera does not allow MPD access to your live video stream; it only enables investigators to know that a camera is present at your location so they can more easily request video evidence should an incident occur.
