Yard Seller Resources & Tips for a Successful Yard Sale
Getting ready for the Avon Woods Neighborhood Yard Sale? A little preparation goes a long way! Use these simple tips to make your sale organized, welcoming and successful.
Days Before the Sale
Get Organized
- Sort items into clear categories (kid’s toys, books, kitchen items, clothing, home décor, etc.)
- Group similar items together so shoppers can browse easily.
Price Items Clearly
- Price items fairly and visibly
- Removable garage sale stickers work great. (Example: Garage sale price stickers on Amazon)
Remember: Price to sell, not to profit — the goal is to move items along!
Gather Supplies
- Tables, bins or shelving for display
- Canopies or umbrellas for shade
- Clothing racks or hangers (a portable coat rack works wonders — even an a-frame ladder could hold a few items)
Make Your Sale Stand Out
- Prepare a sign for your front yard or mailbox
- Add helium balloons or bright colors to catch attention
Plan for Payments
- Cash box (a tackle box, tool box or small container works perfectly)
- Plenty of small bills: $1s, $5s and coins
- Consider accepting mobile payments like: Venmo, PayPal or Cash App
Keep it Safe & Accessible
- Make sure walkways are clear
- Keep the sales area safe for people of all ages and abilities
Day of the Sale (Early Morning)
Set Up for Success
- Arrange tables and displays early
- Place items neatly and make popular items easy to spot
Secure Valuables
- Keep higher-value items close by or behind your table.
- Make sure someone stays with your cash box at all times
Add Your Signage
- Put out signs in your front yard or mailbox.
- Add directional signs at key corners if you’d like
- Don’t forget balloons if you’re using them!
Add a Little “Extra”
Want to make your sale more memorable and fun? Consider offering:
- Refreshments (lemonade, bottled water, snacks — free or for a small fee)
- Background music for an atmosphere that makes people want to take their time
- A “Freebies” bin for items you really want gone
Extra Tips for More Sales
Here are a few additional recommendations that can make a big difference:
Bundle Deals Work Wonders
- Try “3 for $1” or “Fill a bag for $5” pricing later in the day
Keep Items Off the Ground
- Shoppers are more likely to buy when items are displayed at table height
Have Bags Ready
- Grocery bags or boxes help buyers carry more (and buy more!)
Be Friendly and Approachable
- A simple greeting goes a long way in creating a welcoming vibe
Plan for the End
Decide ahead of time what you’ll do with leftovers:
- Donate
- Offer free curbside pickup
- Save for next year or your next sale
