SUMMARY:August 2023 Food Truck Social
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a neighborhood food truck night on Thursday\, Aug. 24\, from 5:30 to 7:30pm. The Green Beetle food truck was such a hit last time — even during a constant downpour — that we thought we would bring them back in hopes for better weather! Memphis’s oldest tavern (established 1939)\, The Green Beetle now brings their Southern-influenced comfort food to you with some favorites from their South Main Street Memphis landmark\, like Bacon BBQ Burger\, Smoked Chicken Sandwich and Dirty Bird Fries. \n\n\n\nSave room for dessert! Our very own neighbor\, Mr. Joe’s Ice Cream truck will be selling cold sweet treats as well. \n\n\n\nPlease bring a chair or picnic blanket\, and come out for a little while to get to know your Avon Woods neighbors!

SUMMARY:Neighborhood Watch Kick-off
DESCRIPTION:Crime is no longer something that happens to someone else\, in some other neighborhood. We are all affected by it. It’s time we band together as Avon Woods neighbors to do something. Join us the evening of Thursday\, March 21\, at White Station Elementary as we kick-off our efforts to form an Avon Woods Neighborhood Watch. \n\n\n\nNeighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that enlists the participation of residents in cooperation with the Memphis Police Department to reduce crime\, improve the quality of life\, and establish a sense of well-being by watching out for one another in our area. The Neighborhood Watch Program is a highly successful effort and proven deterrent to crime that has been in existence for more than 50 years in cities and counties across America — and several neighborhoods throughout Memphis. There is no cost to join. \n\n\n\nWe will be joined by a Neighborhood Watch representative from the Memphis Police Department\, who will introduce us to the basics of forming an official Neighborhood Watch. The program will provide crime prevention education and awareness\, personal property identification\, and home security tactics. \n\n\n\nWe will discuss your neighborhood concerns\, develop an action plan\, and begin to identify block captains for each street section in Avon Woods. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us in the library at White Station Elementary\, 4840 Chickasaw Rd.\, graciously opened to us by Principal Bradley K. Breeden. Please park and enter the building through the entrance facing the west parking lot behind Avon School. \n\n\n\nHelp spread the news. Post a link to this page on social media\, email or text the link to your neighbors. \n\n\n\n\nThe best crime awareness device ever invented is a good neighbor. \nNeighborhood Watch

SUMMARY:Survival Awareness Training
DESCRIPTION:The Avon Woods Neighborhood Association is sponsoring “Survival Awareness Training” led by retired FBI Special Agent Matthew Campbell\, the evening of Thursday\, Sept. 12. Based on Matt’s extensive experience with critical incidents\, such as active shooters\, assaults\, kidnapping\, and information obtained from thousands of actual FBI cases\, this training will give you the knowledge necessary to identify and avoid potentially dangerous situations as well as how to react if you are involved in one. \n\n\n\nLearn tips for navigating today’s world safely by having a plan for your physical safety at work\, at a shopping mall\, a restaurant\, or any public setting. Attendees will learn what bad guys seek in their victims and how not to be “that person.” Additionally\, some of the training centers on child safety and keeping our children safe in today’s dangerous world. \n\n\n\nPeople leave this training feeling empowered by their new set of skills and confidence they will make the right decisions for their safety and the safety of their families. This education will prepare you to: \n\n\n\n\nIncrease situational awareness\n\n\n\nAnticipate problems\n\n\n\nAvoid patterns\n\n\n\nTrain your mind\n\n\n\nAvoid being a target\n\n\n\nKnow how to flee and how to fight if necessary\n\n\n\nProtect your children and loved ones\n\n\n\n\nAbout Matthew Campbell\n\n\n\nSurvival Awareness Training was created by Matthew Campbell\, who recently retired from the FBI after a 25-year career. Matthew was the leader of an FBI SWAT team that conducted missions critical to our government both in the United States and overseas. He was an FBI Firearms Instructor\, Tactical Instructor\, Self Defense Instructor\, and the Active Shooter Coordinator for the FBI\, Jackson Division. In his 25 years of experience\, Matthew has investigated numerous violent crimes\, including child and adult abductions\, violent robberies and assaults\, as well as white collar crimes. \n\n\n\nNo Cost to Attend \n\n\n\nThis is a free event\, sponsored and paid for by the Avon Woods Neighborhood Association\, and open to all neighborhood residents. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHelp spread the news. Post a link to this page on social media\, email or text the link to your neighbors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaution to parents: Although Matt recommends this presentation for both adults and teens\, be aware that there will be discussions about child abductions and pedophiles\, so be guided accordingly.
